A Natural Remedy for Gingivitis, Toothaches, and Mouth Sores
by Rudy Silva

Everyone has a variety of bacteria in their mouth. Some have more than others. This bacterium helps you by beginning the digestive process.

Excess bacteria in your mouth have now been found to cause more than tooth decay, gingivitis or gum disease. So, you need to know, even though you might not have gingivitis, how to control these plaque-building bacteria in your mouth.

Bacteria that create gingivitis live in your plaque and cause your gums to inflame, bleed, and separate from your teeth. You can also have bad breath when you have gingivitis. In more severe cases, your gums become sore, teeth hurt, gums recede, and teeth loosen.

To stop the inflammation and gum separation use this natural remedy to kill some of these bacteria and strengthen your gums in your mouth.

Here are the herbs and the formula you will need to make a remedy for a mild case of gingivitis:

2 parts white oak bark herb - powder

1 part myrrh gum herb - power or granules

3/4 part Peppermint leaves converted to powder

1/2 part anise herb - power or seeds

1/8 part clove - powder

If herbs and leaves are not in powder form, grind them in a coffee grinder. Use this formula to make as much powder as you want.

Place the mixture into a small container. I usually use a small-unused vitamin bottle.

I usually mix a small amount and use a tablespoon as my measuring tool. For example, 2 tablespoons of white oak, 1 tablespoon of myrrh gum, 3/4 tablespoon of peppermint leaves, and so on. The measurements do not have to be so precise.

How to use it:

To control bacteria in your mouth, use this power once a week. If you have gingivitis, you can use this 3 times a day. Place some powder on your toothbrush and brush your teeth and gums. After brushing spit out, a few time, the saliva and residue powder. Don't rinse out your mouth since you want to keep the active herb powders in your month. You can swallow any that remains in your mouth with no problem.

This powder combination is bitter, but quite powerful and will get the job done. You can add more peppermint powder to make it less bitter, if you like.

For severe cases of gingivitis and toothaches, you can also moist some powder with distilled water and then place the paste all along the your teeth and gums - front and back. Leave the paste in your mouth as long as you can. Don't worry about the herbs getting in between your teeth. This remedy works.

My wife was schedule for a root canal last year and a few weeks before her tooth started paining and couldn't sleep. So I made this remedy. She just placed the powers around the painful area. It wasn't long before the pain stopped and she was able to go to sleep.

There have been other clients that have used this remedy for a month and successfully avoided having the dentist apply gingivitis treatment. In cases of severe gingivitis, go see your dentist and at the same time use this remedy.

Bee/Hornet Sting Remedy

Thanks again to Ray for this article.

Wish I knew this when my daughter was young.  She used to really swell up and suffer during childhood.  The bees seemed to go right to her and not the other kids.

If it you have a allergy to Bee or Hornet stings get medical attention right away.

*** Start of article***

A couple of weeks ago I was unfortunate enough to get stung by both a bee and hornet while working in the garden.

My arm swelled up so off to the doctor I went. The clinic gave me cream and an antihistamine.

The next day the swelling was getting progressively worse so off to my regular doctor I went. Infected arm - needed an antibiotic. What was interesting is what the Dr. told me. The next time you get stung put a penny on the bite for 15 minutes. I thought, wow next time (if there ever is one) I will try it.

Well that night Shelley's niece got stung by two bees. When she came over to swim I looked at the bite and it had already started to swell. So off I went to get my money. Taped a penny to her arm for 15 minutes. The next morning, there was no sign of a bite. Wow were we surprised. Her niece we decided, just wasn't allergic to the sting.

Well guess what happened again on Saturday night. I was helping Shelley deadhead her flowers and
guess what? You are right I got stung again two times by a hornet on my left hand. Was I tickled. I thought, here I go again having to go to the doctor for yet another antibiotic.

Well I promptly went into the house, again got my money out, and taped two pennies to my bites and then sat and sulked for 15 minutes. The penny took the sting out of the bite immediately.

I still wasn't sure what was going to happen. In the meantime the hornets were attacking Shelley and she got stung on the thumb. Again the penny. The next morning I could only see the spot where he had stung me. No redness, no swelling. Went over to see Shelley and hers was the same. Couldn't even tell where she got stung. Then Shelley got stung again on Monday night on her back---cutting the grass.

Again it worked.

Just wanted to share the marvelous information in case any of you are experiencing the same problem at home. We need to have a stock of pennies on hand at school and at home.

The Dr. said somehow the copper in the penny counteracts the bite. I would never had believed it.
But it definitely does work.

So remember this little bit of wisdom and pass it on to your friends, children, grandchildren, etc.

Gout Remedies... Beyond The Cherry

Most people thought that the best gout cure was cherries, but they were wrong! The newest research is revealing a better solution for your gout symptoms. Though cherries do work and have been researched thoroughly, a new natural health treatment can make you feel like gout is a thing of the past.
Let me explain.

A Natural Gout Cure - Cherries

For many years, those red delicious cherries we all love have been thought to help control and decrease gout symptoms. Over 50 years ago a doctor named Ludwig Blau stated announced a cure for one of the oldest diseases known to man, gout. Dr. Blau suggested that eating about 8 cherries a day would cure gout.

Though many thought Blau discovered the cure for gout; he was wrong. Currently there is no cure for gout. However, modern research studies have shown that Blau was correct with his cherry remedy. We now know that cherries contain anthocyanins which have anti-inflammatory properties that work in the same way NSAIDs do.

In other words, cherries work to reduce the inflammation that causes gout pain by reducing the uric acid that causes gout. And cherries are much better than NSAIDs because cherries cure the cause of gout. And NSAIDS only treat the symptoms (inflammation).

However, many gout sufferers have found that eating as many as 40 cherries isn't the most convenient remedy. And now researchers believe that cherries are not the only gout cure that works.

The Most Effective Treatment for Gout

Gout was once thought to be caused by an unhealthy diet and excessive alcohol. This was sort of true but there are many other causes as well. By looking at all the causes of gout, natural health doctors have been recommending a natural cure for gout that works nearly all the time.

If you would like to start taking your health more serious and cure gout naturally, here are 5 tips you should know about a natural cure for gout.

  1. Dieting! Most people who cure gout do it with a healthy diet! Some of our customers have lost up to 50 pounds of weight by knowing what foods their body needs to treat gout. You should keep a food journal and keep note of what foods cause high uric acid levels. Stay away from purine-rich foods like: red meats, alcohol, fish and beans.

  1. Vitamins! Did you know that most gout sufferers are deficient in 3 key vitamins that are essential for flushing uric acid? You should begin supplementing vitamins A, B5 and E which are in many fruits and vegetables. Many of our customers simply eat various fruits which contain these vitamins plus anthocyanins (flush uric acid).

  1. Flush! Are you flushing everyday? I'm not talking about the toilet but about your body! Did you know that you can literally flush your body of many impurities with water and a high fiber diet? Flushing benefits your body by keeping the bad stuff out, like uric acid. A Gout Remedy Report explains more about this.

  1. More Acids! Surprisingly, ascorbic acid is also very beneficial to flushing uric acid. Did you know that ascorbic acid is also another name for vitamin C? Vitamin C is also a simple natural remedy that has helped many gout sufferers.

Natural Alternative to Sleep Aides

Latley I have been receiving numerous emails urging me to purchase Ambien, amoung other medications/drugs, on the internet.

First of all, it is dangerous to purchase any medication/drug on the internet, they contain dangerous ingredients and may not be distributed by licensed pharmacies.

I have also learned that there have been samples of Ambien purchased on the Internet, that where found to contain haloperidol (Haldol), a potent antipsychotic drug with dangerous side effects.

For more information about dangerous drugs on the Internet, contact the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or visit:  www.fda.gov/buyonlineguide.

There are natural altenative to medications/drugs.

Here is another example…

The Drug -  Ambien

Ambien is a hypnotic drug, it work by literally hypnotizing the brain to sleep.

By binding to the brain's GABA (gamma-amino-butyric-acid) receptors, it makes the neurotransmitter to perform more effectively.  GABA's promote sleep by preventing the brain cells from firing, which causes you to sleep.

This medication is usually limited to short-term treatment periods of 1-2 weeks.  Like other sleep medications, there is the possibility of dependency.

Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, sleepwalking, eating and other unusual behavior during sleep they later had no memory of doing.

Side effects:
  • daytime drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • feeling "drugged" or light-headed
  • lack of coordination
  • amnesia
  • forgetfulness
  • vivid or abnormal dreams
  • nausea
  • constipation
  • stuffy nose
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • muscle pain
  • blurred vision

Serious side effects include:

  • depresspression
  • unusual thoughts
  • risk-taking behavior
  • decreased inhibitions
  • no fear of danger
  • anxiety
  • aggression
  • feeling restless
  • agitated
  • hallucinations
  • confusion
  • loss of personality

Natural Alternative - Sleepzyme

Sleepzyme has seven ingredients that help to improve sleep, each of the ingredients in this formula have been proven to be safe and effective at improving sleep.

It works without the dangerous and harmful side effects and is NOT addictive.

Side effects:

  • light grogginess - This tends to occur when the supplement is taken too late in the evening and not enough time for sleep has been allowed.  You need to allow at least 6-8 hours of possible sleep time.
  • enhanced dream activity.  By spending more time in deep sleep, you may experience more dreams then you currently do.  Not a bad thing.

Natural Alternatives for Drugs

You can improve your health, by making changes in your lifestyle and by learning what natural alternatives can be used to replace prescription or over the counter drugs.

Whether you take a drug or natural alternative for an aliment, make an educated decision of whether the benefits outweigh the risks, do your research and learn about the short term and long-term side effects.

When using a natural alternative, be sure to choose a quality product.

Manufacturers of holistic herbal remedies don't use or approve of standardization processing.

The standardization process involves the isolation and concentration of a single ingredient.  This is done with harsh chemicals, traces of which can't be fully removed from the final product.

Drug:  Statins - Lipitor, Crestor and Lovastatin are called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, because they reduce cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme needed for cholesterol production.

Natural Alternative:  Red Yeast Rice also contains a natural form of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, called monacolins, along with other compounds that help reduce cholesterol and improve cardiovascular health. Studies show Red Yeast Rice can significantly lower total and LDL cholesterol levels, and triglycerides.

Drug: NSAIDs like Celebrex, aspirin and ibuprofen do reduce the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis.

Natural Alternative:  Glucosamine, an amino sugar that is an element of cartilage, is comparable to ibuprofen for symptom relief.  It appears to stimulate cartilage-building cells called chondrocytes.  Studies suggest that glucosamine may reduce the risk of osteoarthritis progression by up to 54%.

Drug: Ambien - Sleep Aide.  As with other pills in its class, this drug may create a dependency and you may not able to sleep without it.

Natural Alternative: Melatonin is a hormone, synthesized in the brain's pineal gland, which regulates the body's sleep patterns. It is one of the most studied natural remedies for insomnia.  And is not habit-forming.

Drug: Restasis is an immune-suppressing and inflammation-suppressing drug, cyclosporine, in an eye drop form. It's used for chronic dry eyes, and works by suppressing the inflammation that disrupts tear secretion.

Natural Alternative: Fish Oil - Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can help dry eyes.  Tears contain oil, not having enough oil in your tears; they don't lubricate well and can evaporate too fast.  Having essential omega-3s in your system helps make your tears oilier. Fish oil helps reduce inflammation that can interfere with tear production.

Drug:  Donnatal is prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome. It is an anti-spasmodic, so it relieves pain and cramping.

Natural Alternative:  Peppermint Oil is known to decreases gastrointestinal smooth muscle spasms, reduces abdominal pain, distention and flatulence, and decreases diarrhea in 70% to 80% of patients. People with irritable bowel syndrome also find relief by increasing their intake of soluble fiber, and using probiotics for bloating and abdominal pain.

Drug: Benadryl is a brand name for diphenhydramine, an over the counter antihistamine used to treat hay fever and other nasal allergies. It works by blocking receptor sites for histamine, the biochemical that causes the runny nose and scratchy eyes.

Natural Alternative:  Quercetin is a compound found in many plants. It is considered a natural antihistamine, because it can inhibit release of histamine from certain immune cells. Evidence suggests that quercetin inhibits antigen-stimulated histamine release from mast cells of patients with hay fever. It's also a powerful anti-inflammatory. Also adding bromelain and vitamin C can be helpful.

Natural Anxiety & Depression Relief
by Sherry Brescia

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 40 million Americans over the age of 18 have some type of anxiety disorder.

The typical treatment for them is, of course, dangerous drugs.

Here's a quick lowdown on the drug options.

Tranquilizers and benzodiazepines

One of the drug options is tranquilizers and benzodiazepines (like Xanax, Valium, Klonopin and Ativan).

Sure, they curb some feelings of anxiety, but at what price?  Here are some of the common side effects:

  • Drowsiness, lack of energy
  • Clumsiness, slow reflexes
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • Impaired thinking and judgment
  • Memory loss, forgetfulness
  • Nausea, stomach upset
  • Blurred or double vision

That would make me even more anxious...
Plus long-term benzodiazepine users are often depressed, and higher doses of the drugs can increase the risk of both depression and suicidal thoughts and feelings.

In addition, benzodiazepines cause emotional blunting or numbness and block the feelings of pleasure or pain.

"Walking zombie" would describe it well.  Not a pretty sight.

SSRIs

The other option for anxiety treatment is even worse -- antidepressants or SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake
Inhibitors).

Examples are Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and Celexa.

These are the "published" side effects of these legalized poisons:

  • Nausea
  • Nervousness (yes--they worsen a condition they're supposed to "help")
  • Headaches
  • Sleepiness
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach upset
  • Weight gain

Pretty depressing...

And here's the kicker--What the drug ads don't tell you is that anxiety and depression are NOT even the result of low serotonin levels to begin with!

The elevated levels of serotonin caused by these drugs can cause changes in your cell neurons that can be classified as brain damage.

How bout that?

Plus ALL antidepressants are required by the FDA to carry a warning about the risk of suicidal thoughts, hostility, and agitation.

Tell you what--I feel anxiety just THINKING about these dangerous chemicals.

There's got to be a better way

Luckily, there is a better way to combat anxiety and depression.

By using a "natural" drug.

Food.

You see, anxiety and depression are very often caused by or associated with excess acidity in the body and/or nutritional deficiencies, and both of these are a result of the food you eat.

Many people who suffer from anxiety disorders are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, especially B-complex vitamins and magnesium.

The typical diet most people have which is loaded with processed foods and refined carbohydrates is not only inherently nutrient deficient, but it makes your body's pH more acidic.  So your body uses up its alkaline minerals (including magnesium and calcium) to neutralize the acid.

Mental AND physical

The typical acid-forming diet is also a BIG reason why digestive problems and anxiety or depression go hand in hand for many people.

Not only does the anxiety aggravate GI disorders because the of brain-gut connection, but the acid-creating foods
they're eating hamper their digestion and nutrient absorption affect them physically as well.

Conditions like IBS, diverticulitis, colitis and acid reflux are all a direct result of poor digestion.  And all the antacids, PPIs, benzodiazepines and SSRIs in the world won't change that.

The great news is that increasing numbers of people are seeing a dramatic improvement in their anxiety symptoms AND their digestive problems once they eat more real foods and increase the alkalinity in their body.

Sheri is an excellent example of this.

She suffered from colitis, IBS and anxiety...but has seen drastic improvements since she changed her diet.

And she's been able to cut her SSRIs in half so far!

Here's her story:

Sherry:

I have been on your Great Taste No Pain program for 1 month now.

I cannot believe how well I feel!

I have high anxiety and it affects my digestive system immensely.  Just eating properly like you teach has been a Godsend for me.

My colitis is under control, as well as my IBS.  I LOVE the cookbook and really enjoy trying the recipes--I have loved everyone that I've eaten.

Thank you for giving me good health and hope to go out and not suffer from pain or embarrassment.

I have even been able to reduce my prescription of Paxil in HALF, plus I have not needed any liquid antacid or even heavy relaxers under stress-filled circumstances.

I just can't thank you enough!

Sheri

*******************

Sherry Brescia:  Sheri, you are living proof of the dramatic difference your diet can make with both your physical and mental health.  I know you'll continue to feel better and better every day, and am confident the SSRIs will become a thing of the past for you.  All my best to you.

**********

If you or someone you know is plagued with anxiety or depression and related digestive problems (or other physical symptoms), know this:

When you make food your drug, make your pH more alkaline and nourish your body like it needs to be, both your body AND mind will say thank you in countless ways.

You can accomplish these important goals simply by following my advice in the Great Taste No Pain health system.

Great Taste No Pain is not a diet--it's a lifestyle that helps you attain a good acid/alkaline balance and efficient digestion.

There are just a few simple principles to remember, and I explain it all in everyday language.  It will make perfect sense to you, and you'll wonder why your doctor never talked to you about this.

Stop being a slave to dangerous, life-altering chemicals and instead start feeling great as you enjoy some positively scrumptious food.

Let Great Taste No Pain be YOUR Godsend.

To your health,

Sherry Brescia

PS: Louise's 12 year son has gotten relief from colitis:

*******************

Dear Sherry,

Thank you for your Great Taste No Pain system.

My son, Brendan, is twelve.  In the past several months he has had stomach cramps, a bloody stool, and has spent an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom with diarrhea.

I am not much into invasive medical procedures.  I started researching colitis, since this is what my husband had when he was my son's age.

I came upon your site, and I bought the system.

In one week's time, my son is experiencing almost no cramps, and the bleeding has decreased dramatically, as
well as the trips to the bathroom.

He finds this way of eating easy, and he does not complain about it.

I have a lot of hope that this will be the answer to a prayer.

Again, thank you.

Louise

Natural Remedies for Depression
by Charlotte Sneddon

Are You Feeling Depressed?

Find out more about natural remedies for depression. Discover herbs, diet and lifestyle changes and holistic remedies that can make a difference.

Depression is becoming a common problem in the modern world. Is this because of increasing stresses, strains and unhappiness with life? Certainly, modern life is harsh, hard and does get many people down. It is very normal to have periods of sadness after certain life events, such as divorce, death, illness, loss of a job etc – this is perfectly natural.

Sometimes though, these periods of sadness can become too intense to cope with, or can linger far too long. This can be called ‘Depression’.
Sometimes Depression has little to do with an unhappy life event, but creeps up on us with no obvious reason.

You should always consult your doctor if you have severe on prolonged periods of unhappy or depressed feelings, particularly if you find yourself
contemplating suicide. Antidepressants do not always have to be the answer though – most conventional doctors themselves will recognise that while antidepressants do have their place in the treatment of depression, they are not the only option at all.

Natural remedies for depression can be equally as effective as antidepressants, and have the benefit of a lack of unpleasant side effects. There are lots of different natural health remedies you can try for depression, from herbal treatments, to lifestyle and diet changes.

The best known herb for depression is St John’s Wort. This is often nick-named ‘The Sunshine Herb’ as it seems to restore a ‘sunny’ disposition and outlook on life. It is particularly useful where depression is caused by a lack of sunlight in the winter months – called S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder). St John’s Wort can also help where depression occurs with insomnia.

St John’s Wort is actually recognised for official use to treat depression in Germany, and is claimed to be effective against 70% of cases of mild to moderate depression. This is as effective, if not more effective, than conventional antidepressant treatments. Always consult your doctor before taking this herb, as there are several conditions and medications it should not be mixed with, particularly prescribed antidepressants.

As well as herbal treatments, there are lifestyle and diet changes you can make. These should help you recover from periods of depression, and should help keep depression away in the future. The usual suspects for an unhealthy diet should be avoided, namely; alcohol, nicotine, sugar, fatty foods, salt, processed foods. Instead a general healthy diet should be followed, with lots of fresh fruits and veg, wholegrains and oily fish such as salmon or mackerel.

One very helpful foodstuff against depression is chocolate … but before you hit the candies, note that it must be dark chocolate, with over 70% cocoa content, to help raise serotonin levels in the brain.

A regular exercise program may not sound very technical, but it has been proven to help against depression. Don’t worry, as your exercise program needn’t be too onerous. You should start gently, at a level appropriate for your own fitness level, and gradually work up to around 30-40 minutes of moderate exercise, between 3-5 times per week. This can be something as simple as walking. Walking in the countryside, at the beach or in a park, amongst nature, can really help with the depression-busting benefits of exercise.

Herbs, diet and lifestyle are not your only options for beating depression. There are plenty of other holistic remedies that can give great benefit to sufferers of depression. For the most part, the one you choose will depend on your own personal preferences and personality. Choose from treatments such as acupuncture, meditation, hypnosis and visualization, flower remedies, color and light therapy, inversion therapy and more.

If you think you might be feeling depressed you should certainly consult your doctor, and continue taking any prescribed antidepressants, but do be aware that there is much you can do to help yourself with natural remedies for depression. Under the guidance of your doctor you can gradually switch from antidepressants to all natural health remedies, and feel better, and happier.

A Natural Approach to Treatment and Prevention of this Common Allergy Condition
By Consumer Health Advocate, Frank Mangano

Hay fever, which is also known as allergic rhinitis, is a condition that usually does not involve hay and is actually not a fever. It is believed that the condition was termed hay fever because years ago, people would sneeze, have nasal congestion, and eye irritation while harvesting field hay. The truth is only a small percentage of the substances found in hay cause allergic rhinitis.

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis or hay fever include:

  • Nasal Congestion
  • Runny Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy eyes & Nose
  • Tearing in the Eyes
  • Coughing (as a result of post nasal drip)
  • Loss of Taste & Smell
  • Nose bleeding (if the condition is severe)

These symptoms can often cause great discomfort in a person’s life and can lead to other diseases such as sinusitis and asthma.

For the most part, proteins cause allergic rhinitis. In most cases pollen, which is a small, light protein produced from plants & trees is responsible for the condition. Pollen is generally spread by the wind and can become lodged in the nasal lining tissues (mucus membranes) and other parts of the respiratory tract. At certain times of the year, as many as 10 percent of Americans suffer from allergic rhinitis. Allergies are a genetic trait which people are born with.

The pharmaceutical companies, which are part of a multi-billion dollar industry, have a ball during allergy seasons. Allergy seasons are the points in the year when pollen is in the air. Trees usually pollinate in the spring, while grasses pollinate in the spring and summer. Weeds usually pollinate in the late summer and fall.

During these times, the "Big Pharma’s" make "Big Money" off of antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl), chlorpheniramine (Chlortrimaton), clemastine fumarate (Tavist), dexbrompheniramine (Drixoral), loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and azelastine (Astelin Nasal Spray).

These chemicals come fully equipped with a host of side effects including:

  • Sedation
  • Tiredness
  • Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Disturbed Coordination
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Palpitations
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Confusion
  • Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Blurred Vision
  • Double Vision
  • Tremors
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Nausea
  • Need I say anymore?

Rather than abusing your body while making the drug companies richer, try a natural approach to preventing and coping with your allergies.

First off, avoid the allergens that stimulate symptoms. Avoid dogs and cats if dander stimulates symptoms and be sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains and raw nuts. Avoid tobacco and alcohol.

If your allergies begin to act up, try supplementing with the following:

  • Bromelain (1,000 mg 3 times a day) - Reduces inflammation associated with hay fever symptoms.

  • Coenzyme Q10 (30 mg twice a day)- Improves oxygenation and immunity.

  • Quercetin (400 mg twice a day) - Stabilizes the membranes of the cells that produce histamine, which triggers allergic response.

  • Vitamin B Complex (take as directed on label) - Ensures proper functioning of the immune system.

  • Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids (3,000 - 10,000 mg 3 times a day) - Natural anti-inflammatory.

  • Zinc (50 -80 mg daily) - Boosts immune function.

  • Garlic (take as directed on label) - Aids in relieving sinus inflammation, when used in liquid form.

  • Eucalyptus Oil (take as directed on label) - Relieves congestion when inhaled in steam form.

  • Eyebright and Yarrow liquid extracts (take as directed on label) - Relieve hay fever symptoms.

How To Get Rid of Your Headache The All Natural Way
By, Frank Mangano

Here’s an article that I believe can benefit almost anyone. Why? Because almost anyone and everyone suffers from headaches, some more frequently than others. In fact, every 10 seconds, someone in the United States goes to the emergency room with a headache or migraine. Plus, more than $1 billion is spent on over-the-counter medications to treat headaches and Migraines.

Migraine headaches are known as vascular headaches, meaning they result from excessive blood flow into the head, which causes pressure. The cause of migraines ranges from stress and tension to hormonal changes to allergic reactions. Genetic predisposition, learned habits, certain medications, dietary factors, psychological problems, physical disturbances, environmental factors, body structural problems and lifestyle factors can also be attributed to causing headaches.

What you may find most astonishing however, is that some medications including those designed to treat headaches including those used to treat headaches can actually cause them. Use of these medications can lead to "medication overuse headache" (MOH). Over the past 15 years, researchers from Princeton University have determined that these medications are most responsible for causing headaches.

· Triptans, a newer class of drugs, increased headaches from 0 percent to 22 percent

· Analgesics (painkillers) increased from 8 percent to 32 percent

· Overuse headache from combinations of acute medications increased from 10 percent to 23 percent

Based on these statistics alone, one should implement the application of alternative and natural methods to treating headaches. These methods include massage, stretching, aromatherapy, gel pack hydrotherapy application, herbs, acupuncture, stress reduction methods, chiropractic or osteopathic and homeopathic treatments.

My top recommendation to relieve headaches naturally is acupuncture. According to the British Medical Journal, July 29, researchers in Germany performed a study that involved dividing 270 patients with similar symptoms into three groups for a randomized, controlled trial. Over an eight-week period, the three 3 groups were treated using 3 techniques. The first was treated with full traditional acupuncture, the second with minimal acupuncture, and the third with neither method.

Headache rates dropped by almost half in the group that was treated with “traditional acupuncture.” They also experienced 7 fewer days of headaches in the four weeks following the trial than they did in the four weeks prior to it.

The results of those in the “minimal acupuncture group” were very similar. They experienced an average drop of 6.6 days with headaches.

The third group which had no acupuncture performed on them saw an average drop of only 1.5 days. That’s just 10% less than what they had experienced prior to the study.

The conclusion that the researchers came to is that acupuncture is just as effective as or more effective in treating tension headaches than treatments already accepted.

Aside from acupuncture, here are 6 tips to treat headache pain:

  1. At the first sign of pain, give yourself a mini-massage. Press gently using the pads of your fingers and rub the scalp, back of the neck, temples and shoulders.

  1. Apply hot or cold treatment or alternate between the two. To apply hot treatments, you can take a hot bath or shower, or place a hot, wet washcloth or heating pad on the back of your neck. Foe cold treatments, place an ice pack on your forehead, the back of your neck or the top of your head.

  1. Just a few drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil into your bath will work wonders as well. Or you can even some on your temples, the nape of the neck and the hairline.

  1. Feverfew which is an herbal tea is also a great choice as well as chamomile and peppermint as they are calming.

  1. Supplements work great if you suffer from headaches frequently. Calcium and magnesium relieve muscular tension. Bromelain reduces inflammation and glucosamine sulfate can help to relieve pain.

  1. Drink a glass of pure water every two hours. Water will flush out toxins and also keep the head and neck muscles supple.

So the next time you feel a headache coming on, take a look at the stats and flush the meds down the toilet. Remember, there’s always a healthy alternative..

Exercise: The All-Natural Anti-Depressant - Evidence Mounts Regarding Its Link to Enhancing Mood
By Consumer Health Advocate, Frank Mangano

I cherish the time I have to exercise. It’s the time of the day where I can get my body away from the desk, and my head away from life’s stresses. As much as I enjoy exercising, though, it’s not always something I’m dying to go out and do. But without fail, by the time I get back, I always feel really better than before I left. In fact, other than the fact that I know it’s good for me and my cardiovascular fitness, I think the feeling I get afterward is what keeps me exercising. On those occasions where work piles up and I’m unable to exercise as much as I’d like, I feel it in my mood. Perhaps you can relate to this.

Is this feeling of sadness just us or is there really something to it?

Well, according to new research, our blue feelings aren’t entirely off base.

British researchers presented their findings related to mood and exercise at a recent conference held by the British Nutrition Foundation. Researchers like Nannette Mutrie of the University of Strathclyde and others from the University of Bristol presented their findings (conducted independently but with similar results) which Mutrie says are relatively new to the scientific world in how exercise and mood coincide with one another. According to Mutrie and her findings, exercise is an important part of everyday life as it serves as a natural mood and self-esteem enhancer, not to mention a great sleep inducer.

The researchers from the University of Bristol expressed similar sentiments with respect to exercise’s beneficial effects on the brain, especially in the way of warding off brain diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The Connecticut-based team of researchers reviewed 17 studies that analyzed the link between sedentary lifestyles vs. active lifestyles and what effect they had on the brain over time. What they found was that among people whose lifestyles involved some form of regular exercise activity, they were 40 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to those whose lifestyles were inactive or sedentary. The findings were the same among both men and women.

Of course, findings like these provide just that much more reason to get off the sofa, rocking chair or Barcalounger and to start moving – and that recommendation applies to all ages, no matter how young or how old (well, except infants, who have a legitimate excuse J).

The question, of course, is how long should you exercise? Ideally, you should be exercising moderately, every day, for about an hour. Unfortunately, an hour’s worth of exercise isn’t always feasible and among those who aren’t exercising at all, exercising for an hour might seem overwhelming. This often causes them to forgo exercising entirely (classic “all or nothing” thinking). Every little bit counts, so if all you can do is 10 minutes of walking, get up and do it. The key is consistency and increasing your energy output little by little as you progress and get stronger.

Eventually – believe it or not – you will get to the point where a day without exercise will feel like leaving the house with only one shoe on – you’re able to function fine without the shoe, but there’s something missing that leaves you feeling “out of step” all day long.

For the sake of your body, for your mind, and as we are becoming more and more educated about, for the sake of your mood, get out and exercise, whether its on the court, on the field, on the bike or on the treadmill. I guarantee you won’t regret it. In fact, in time, you’ll wonder how you ever did without it.

Natural Remedy for Acid Reflux

Discover your own best natural remedy for acid reflux.

Understand the causes, and find out why conventional treatments could actually be making you worse!

Learn which herbal remedies could help you out...

The pain from acid reflux and heartburn can be quite intense and quite scary.

And did you know that using antacids may actually be making your problem worse?

I will show you how a natural remedy for acid reflux and heartburn is definitely your best solution…

Acid reflux happens when some partly digested foods and stomach acids, come back up, from the stomach into the esophagus (food pipe).

This can cause a number of symptoms, including burping, belching, indigestion and heartburn.

The pain is actually caused by the strong acids from the stomach, irritating the delicate lining of the esophagus (food pipe).

Although heart burn and acid reflux may seem to be a minor irritation, it should never be ignored. Repeated symptoms over a number of years could lead to inflammation and damage of the delicate esophageal lining, and serious health problems.

Conventional treatments, such as antacids, may temporarily soothe your symptoms. But do take care, as repeated use can actually make your problems worse. Frequent use of antacids can cause an increase in stomach acid (called ‘rebound acid’) when you stop taking them – which, of course, makes the problem even worse!

Conventional treatments can have some nasty side effects too – including headaches, rashes, anxiety, confusion and depression – all things you can very well do without!

I think it is best to take a natural approach to acid reflux and heartburn.

The main factor in this natural approach is learning about the causes of acid reflux, and avoiding them. This will certainly clear up any future problems of this kind…

Causes for acid reflux are actually quite simple – over-eating, twisting or lying down after eating, tight clothing around the stomach, stress, cigarette smoke and alcohol. Certain foods can bring on symptoms too – mints, onions, chocolate, fatty foods, caffeine, white sugar, cakes and pastries, spicy foods, tomatoes, citrus fruits.

To avoid symptoms, you should aim to eat your meals in a relaxed manner, chewing well. Don’t overeat, and don’t lie down or sit awkwardly afterwards.

As well as these causes, which you can now avoid, there are herbal natural remedies for acid reflux, which can help considerably – especially when you are in pain from indigestion, heartburn or acid reflux.

Herbal remedies are a gentle and effective solution – and really work…

The best herbal remedies to try are: liquorice, marshmallow root, slippery elm, aloe vera and calendula (marigold). These are most effective taken as a tea – but can also be taken as a capsule, or tincture, if more convenient.

Sage - An Herbal Remedy for Sore Throat, Congestion and Cough

There are many causes of  sore throats, chest congestion or coughs.  Such as a cold, flu, laryngitis, mouth breathing while sleeping, smoking, pollen or a number of other irritates.

Sage kills bacteria, and is very soothing to mucus membranes, as well it breaks up your congestion.  It can help eliminate that annoying cough that often accompanies a cold.

The next time you develop a sore throat , chest congestion or a cough try using the sage remedies below.  In a few days your throat or cough will be feeling better without the use of over the counter drugs.

Sage Gargle (for sore throats)

  1. Boil 1 cup of water.
  2. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of rubbed sage, 1/8 - ¼ tsp. of salt, and empty 2 capsules of Echinacea into the mix.   Echinacea is an anti-viral that also has a numbing effect.  (Don't buy Echinacea that's combined with other herbs.)
  3. Stir and let stand about 15 minutes.
  4. Stir again, and pour through a strainer (keep this) into another cup.
  5. Reheat as hot as you can tolerate.  You can test it on your lips.
  6. Gargle deeply into your throat, 2 or 3 times.

It's best not to eat or drink for a little while, so you don't dilute the effect.

Put the strained material back in the liquid, cover and store in the refrigerator.  You can reheat it for about 2 days.  Reheat in the microwave for 2 minutes on medium heat)

Remember to strain it before gargling!

Don't stop completely until at least a day after your symptoms subside.

Sage Steam (for chest congestion or cough)

  1. Take a big pot with 2" of water in it, add 2 Heaping Tablespoons of Rubbed Sage (right out of your spice rack, if it's not too old!)
  2. If you're sick (cold or flu),  add 4 capsules of Echinacea for an extra anti-viral boost.  (Don't buy Echinacea that's combined with other herbs)
  3. Bring to a boil, stir, then simmer (med-low) for 15 minutes. (Stir occasionally)
  4. Bring the temp back up (almost) to a boil again.

Now it's ready.

  1. Put a towel over your head (to trap the steam), and your head over the pot.  Steam can burn, so be careful.
  2. Inhale the steam deeply into your lungs (even if it makes you cough terribly) through your mouth, then your nose.
  3. Do this as long as you can stand it (5 min.).

Set aside to use later.  I make a fresh pot each day that it's needed.

Have the tissues close!

For best results, steam 3-6 times a day while you're ill.  Obviously, you can back off as you begin to feel better.  Don't stop completely until at least a day after your symptoms subside.

Thyme Herb Remedies and Benefits

Thyme has many herbal medicinal qualities long overlooked. Read on to find out what and why.

Thyme has been used in kitchens throughout the world for centuries and more to flavor stews and mix with roast potatoes. It is a widely used and popular herb found in nearly every kitchen cabinet. It is easy to obtain and relatively inexpensive to purchase fresh or dried. This wonderfully fragrant herb has many uses in the kitchen, but the ones that I wish to discuss here are the ones that most people overlook or never knew of in the first place.

Thyme is derrived from a Greek word meaning courage. The roman soldiers of long ago would bathe in it to invigorate themselves for battle, and the ladies of yore would sew sprigs of the herb into the vests of their errant knights as a token of good luck. The Egyptians used it in their infamous ceremonies as an ingredient in their embalming fluids; it is known to be both a preservative and an antifungal agent.

One of the most useful factors of this herb is its antiseptic qualities. Used as a tea bag and warmed it can cure styes, and greatly aid pink eye or conjunctivitus. The combination of the soothing warmth of the tea bags and the drawing qualities of the herb add up to pure relief when used in this manner.

If you grow it as a fresh herb in your garden it can be crushed and used to clean cuts and scrapes, giving you an immediate garden antiseptic remedy. These qualities have ben proven by laboratory tests and these tests have shown that it does in FACT destroy many forms of fungus and disease causing bacteria. If drank as a tea or eaten raw it can help gastroenteritis greatly, too. Because of its antispasmodic qualities it is also of great relief to women suffering from cramps during their monthly periods.

Used as a tea it can relive both hangovers and also most herbalists recommend it as a digestive aid or tonic. Finally, it is a great cough remedy. Many herbalists recommend its usage for whooping cough, cold, and for sore throats. It is a plant that attracts bees easily and the honey produced by these thyme bees can be readily found in most good supermarkets. This honey plus the teas, that was mentioned before, are the best remedies available for these ailments.

Toe Fungus Remedies

Here are a few my daughter came across while searching the internet to find a natural way to help me heal my toe fungus.  My big toe has been plaguing me for a several years. I have tried several products with no results.

The Epsom Salt Soaks is the first one I tried and the only thing that has helped.  I saw results within the first week and it continues to improve each day.  My toe looks healthy, the nail is growing back clear and strong.

Epsom Salt Soaks
Author Unknown

Soaking the affected foot in Epsom salt mixed with hot water will help wash away fungus and improve circulation to the nail bed. However Epsom salt is not an antifungal treatment so while this may provide temporary relief it is not a cure, but more of one weapon in the arsenal.

At least once or twice a day, preferably three times a day, soak your affected toes in a shallow pan or container with very hot water and a palm full of Epsom salt (a few tablespoons of Epsom salt). I used very hot water (boiled water cooled enough to tolerate soaking) for my treatment. I am not sure if room temperature water is also effective, but at present I suspect very hot water works better. I boiled water and added it to a shallow pan and as soon as it was comfortable to soak my toes, I poured the Epsom salt over my toes and nails.  I soaked my toes for at least 15 to 20 minutes while watching TV or reading a book. If the water was initially too hot, I would just dip my toes in it to get them wet, poured Epsom salt directly on the nails and waited a little till the water was hot but not overly hot to be painful. As your toes are soaking in the water, you can add more Epsom salt directly over the toenails to have a higher concentration of the magnesium sulfate right on top of the toenails. Let the nails be fully surrounded and covered with the Epsom salt. It really doesn't matter as much how much of the Epsom salt is in the rest of the pan. What matters is that there is a good amount of Epsom salt directly over and surrounding the toenails.

Here's a great idea that works even better. If you happen to spend a lot of time by your computer or desk, keep your toes in a thick soup of Epsom salt as long as you wish, the longer the better, even if it is several hours a day. This will speed your healing. It is a good idea to trim your nails very close to the skin, and file your nails as much as you can before soaking. In this case of extended soaking, you may not need to heat the water.

You can soak your toes in a shallow pan with about half an inch of water. One option is to put a folded towel under the pan so that the water is deeper on the toe end rather than the sole end. Add the Epsom salt directly on the toes that are immersed on the deeper end of the pan so that your toenails are completely drowned and surrounded by the Epsom salt-soaked water. This is worth repeating since it is the most crucial part of the treatment.

I am not sure if soaking the feet in Epsom salt more than twice a day will heal the toe nail fungus sooner, but if you are motivated to do so, and have the time, go ahead and do it three or more times a day. If you have the time and the motivation, perhaps four times a day could help you get rid of the nail fungus infection even quicker (or, you have the option as listed above of soaking your toes for several hours at a time while you are working at your computer). One option is to soak in the morning before putting your shoes on for work, then soaking again at lunch or mid afternoon, and again before going to bed. The idea is to not let too much time pass between soaking to prevent the fungus from growing.

In order for this natural toe nail fungus treatment to be effective, you have to keep your feet out of shoes and socks as much as possible. Wear sandals as much as possible. The more time your feet spend in socks or shoes, the more difficult it will be for you to get rid of the toe nail fungal infection.

If you have to wear shoes, for instance at work, at least take them off during lunch, soak your feet in the Epsom salt, and wear new socks and a different pair of shoes the rest of the afternoon and take your shoes off as soon as you get home. Even better, put your shoes on at the last minute. For instance, if you drive to work, wear sandals until you reach the parking lot, and then put them on. After work, remove your shoes when you get to your car. People working out of home are fortunate since they can have bare feet all day.

Sleep at night with your feet outside of the blanket. If you feet get cold, wear socks with the tips cut off so that at least your toes are open to the air. If your feet are inside the blanket, the fungi will like the warmth.

Basically, the idea is to kill the fungus in the nails. Fungi love heat, moistness, and humidity. The cooler and drier you keep your toes and feet, the quicker they will heal. Magnesium sulfate acts as a powerful drying agent. Perhaps it also directly kills the fungi, but I don't know for sure. You will notice that treatment with Epsom salt will make your feet dry.

Distilled Vinegar
Author Unknown

Distilled vinegar is a diluted form of acetic acid. This chemical will naturally attack the fungal infection. If you take a q-tip or similar applicator and soak it in the vinegar for a few seconds and apply it to the affected toenail. It will take several applications to get adequate coverage and it will need to be repeated frequently. Try doing this twice a day - once in the morning and once at night.

Oregano and Olive Oil
Author Unknown

Oregano mixed with olive oil to make a paste for the toenail is a treatment that addresses the basic problems of toenail fungus. It seeps in under the remaining nail and the oregano has natural antibacterial and anti parasitical properties. The oil helps distribute the oregano throughout the nail and nail bed.

Thyme Oil
Author Unknown

Thyme Oil is extracted from a powerful antifungal plant. Applying few drops of thyme oil on the affected area twice a day will work wonders against the infection. One needs to ensure that they cover the toenail with a cotton sock after applying the oil.

Coconut Oil
Author Unknown

The coconut oil is the common household item irrespective of any country. Many success stories about the usage of coconut oil that are going round in the internet and magazines, that it gives amazing results in curing the toenail fungus. All one has to do is just apply the coconut oil over the affected toenail.

The toe area must be massaged after applying the coconut oil. This will enable the oil to reach the parts under the toenail. The toenail fungus problem will be cured completely after few months of regular use. The coconut oil is available everywhere and the cost of the same is also cheap. The application is so simple that the person will have no problem. The coconut oil can also be rubbed around the unaffected toenails in order to prevent the toenail fungus.

Vertigo - A Natural Regimen To Halt A Spinning Room
By Consumer Health Advocate, Frank Mangano

Vertigo is the sensation of unsteadiness, dizziness or a feeling of surroundings moving. The most common form of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).

Vertigo is characterized by rapid episodes of intense dizziness associated with a head change position. The condition may occur when the head is moved in a certain direction, when a person lies down from an upright position, turns over in bed or sits up when they awaken.

Although BPPV can be quite irritating, it’s usually not a serious problem.

The signs and symptoms of BPPV may include:

  • Dizziness
  • A sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving
  • Lightheadedness
  • Unsteadiness
  • A loss of balance
  • Blurred vision associated with quick head movements
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

The signs and symptoms of BPPV can be cyclical with episodes commonly not lasting more than a minute’s time.

In most cases, vertigo is the result of a nerve problem as well as a problem with the structures of the mechanism in the inner ear, which sense movement and changes in the position of a person’s head.

The cause of BPPV can vary from person to person but in most cases, it is always brought on by a change in position of the head. BPPV is usually associated with abnormal rhythmic eye movements (nystagmus) and it’s also possible but unlikely to have BPPV in both ears (bilateral BPPV).

The vestibular labyrinth is the organ of balance within the inner ear. Inside it, are loop-shaped structures (semicircular canals) that monitor the rotation of the head using fluid and hair-like sensors which are connected to the utricle. Inside the utricle are tiny granules or crystals of calcium carbonate which are attached to sensors that help detect gravity and motion.

Sometimes, the particles within the labyrinth loosen and float in the fluid. They can also irritate the nerve endings associated with balance. This causes a person to experience a false sense of movement and causing a brief spinning sensation.

Some causes of BPPV include:

  • Aging
  • A blow to the head
  • A virus affecting the ear (less common)
  • The combination of ear trauma from surgery and prolonged positioning on your back during the procedure (less common)

The regimen outlined below includes a holistic approach to treating and preventing vertigo:

  • Avoid rapid or extreme movements or changes in body position.
  • Sodium intake should be no more than 2,000 mg per day to avoid disrupting the mechanics of the inner ear.
  • Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and all fried foods should be avoided.
  • If dizziness occurs, sit down with your feet flat on the floor and stare at a fixed object until it subsides.

The list of supplements below may also be very beneficial:

  • DMG (take as directed on label) - Increases oxygen supply to the brain.
  • Vitamin B Complex (100 mg of each major B vitamin 3 times daily with meals) - Aids normal brain and nervous system function.
  • Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids (3,000 - 10,000 mg daily in divided doses) and Vitamin E (begin with 200 IU daily and increase slowly to 400 - 800 IU daily) - Improves circulation.
  • Choline and Inositol (take as directed on label) - Necessary for nerve function and improves brain function.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (100 - 200 mg daily) - Improves circulation to the brain.
  • Zinc (30 mg daily) _ promotes a healthy immune system & helps maintain vitamin E levels.
  • Butcher’s Broom and Cayenne (take as directed on label) - Improve circulation.
  • Dandelion Tea or Extract is good for high blood pressure.
  • Ginger (take as directed on label) - Relieves dizziness and nausea.
  • Ginkgo Biloba (take as directed on label) - Improves circulation and increases oxygen supply to the brain.

An All-Natural Approach To Heal And Prevent This Bacterial Disorder
by Consumer Health Advocate, Frank Mangano

Known scientifically as cystitis, a bladder infection is a condition characterized by an urgent need to empty the bladder. In people with this condition, frequent and even painful urination is common. A desire to urinate constantly - even when the bladder is empty - is a symptom common in many people as well.

The urine of a person with a bladder infection often has a cloudy appearance and has a strong unpleasant odor. In children, bladder infections often bring about pain in the lower abdomen as well as a burning sensation during urination. Blood in the urine may also occur. Cystitis is generally more an annoying problem that isn't one of any seriousness but if left untreated it can eventually lead to kidney infection.

The ureters, kidneys, urethra, penis and bladder all play distinct roles in helping the body rid itself of material waste (urine). Urethritis (infection of the urethra), acute pyelonephritis (infection of the kidney) and cystitis (infection of the bladder) are conditions that are more common in women than men and many conditions in which the kidneys, urethra or bladder are affected are described as urinary tract infections (UTI). Most UTIs are concentrated in the bladder & urethra.

The reason why most cases of pyelonephritis, urethritis and cystitis occur more frequently in women than men is because of the closeness of the vagina, anus and urethra and because of the length of the urethra in females. This allows bacteria to easily be transmitted from the anus to the bladder by way of the vagina & urethra.

Bladder infections in men typically occur as a result of bacteria ascending through the urethra or from an infected prostate gland.

Many factors including use of a diaphragm, pregnancy, systemic disorders and sexual intercourse can contribute to the development of a bladder infection. A structural abnormality or an obstruction of the urinary tract which restricts urine flow can also increase risk of developing a bladder infection. Bladder cancer can cause bladder infections as well.

The regimen outlined below includes a holistic approach to treating & preventing bladder infections:

Foods such as watermelon, celery and parsley - which are natural cleansers & diuretics - should be consumed in the diet.

Citrus fruits - which produce alkaline urine that promotes bacterial growth - should be avoided.

Drink plenty of liquids, especially pure, unsweetened cranberry juice, which is a very effective cure for bladder infections. Do not consume cranberry juice cocktail, which is loaded with refined sugar. At least one 8 ounce glass of pure water should be drank every hour.

Avoid carbonated beverages, coffee, chocolate, processed foods, alcohol, simple sugars and caffeine.

Be sure to empty the bladder every two to three hours and avoid "holding it in", which can worsen the infection.

Take 2 teaspoonfuls of whey power or acidophilus tablets or capsules with each meal.

Supplementing with the following may also be beneficial:

Garlic (2 capsules 3 time daily) - Natural antibiotic and a powerful immune system enhancer. Use the brand Kyolic from Wakunaga, which is an odorless organic garlic supplement.

Vitamin C plus bioflavonoids (4,000 - 5,000 mg daily in divided doses) - Produces an antibacterial effect through acidification of urine. Be sure your brand of Vitamin C contains bioflavonoids, which help increase absorption.

Colloidal silver (take as directed on label) - Natural antibiotic that kills viruses, fungi & bacteria.

Acidophilus (take as directed on label and on an empty stomach. You can also use 1tbsp in 1 quart of warm water as a douche) - Essential to restore "friendly" bacteria.

Calcium (1,500 mg daily) - Reduces irritability in the bladder.
Magnesium (750 mg daily) - Helps control the stress response and is needed to balance calcium. Use chelate form.

Potassium (99 mg daily) - Replaces lost potassium from frequent urination.

Buchu (take as directed on label) - An herb that helps stop the burning sensation upon urination.

* Important notes: It is recommended that you seek the advice of a qualified healthcare practitioner prior to using any alternative therapies to treat cystitis. Any recommended doses are for those over age 18. Always check herb and vitamin use with your child's health care practitioner prior to administering them.

Herbal Pain Killer: Better Than Tylenol?

Did You Know...   that there's an aromatic herb that relieves the pain of tension headaches just as quickly as aspirin and over-the-counter analgesics, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol)?

Tension headaches are the most common type of headaches experienced by a vast cross-section of the population.  Statistics show that 95% of women and 90% of men have at least one headache per year, and approximately 1 out of every 6 people in America experience the agony of chronic tension headaches.

As a result, most of us reach out for common over-the-counter headache medications, especially those containing acetaminophen, the most commonly used painkiller in the country today.  On average, 7.3 billion adult Tylenol tablets are consumed annually.

But take heed:  Each year, acetaminophen use causes 100,000 calls to poison control centers, 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and more than 450 deaths from liver failure alone.  Acetaminophen is a leading cause of acute liver failure, even at doses that are within the recommended range.

In May 2009, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration working group released a report urging stronger warnings and stricter dose limits for drugs that, like Tylenol, contain acetaminophen -- and hence may pose an increased risk of liver injury to those who use them improperly.

The ironic thing is that the use of acetaminophen may not be the most effective way to stop headaches.  Here's why:  Headache pain does not originate from inside the brain.  The brain is incapable of feeling pain because it contains no sensory nerves.  The pain actually comes from tension in the outer linings of the brain, the scalp and its blood vessels and muscles.  Common tension headaches occur when the face, neck and scalp tighten up, and that tightening is often induced by stress.

Since headaches originate from the outer surface of the head, peppermint oil has been used to alleviate the pain.  German research headed by Dr. Hartmut Gobel shows that rubbing peppermint oil on one's forehead is just as effective in relieving headaches as taking a headache medication like Tylenol.

Researchers have long known that peppermint oil, whose main constituent is menthol, has an analgesic and cooling effect when applied on the skin.  Menthol calms and soothes the excited nerve fibers in the painful region and can quickly make the pain subside.

Historians report that Gaius Plinius Secundus, better known as Pliny the Elder, a naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, personal friend of the emperor Vespasian, and a writer and investigator of natural and geographic phenomena, recommended applying peppermint leaves to the forehead to treat headaches.

In 1996, the leading headache researchers at the Neurological Clinic at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany showed clinical proof that peppermint oil applied to the forehead indeed reduces headache pain just as effectively as the standard dose of 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen (or 2 tablets of Tylenol).  Dr. Hartmut Gobel's randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study also proved that peppermint oil is just as effective at relieving headaches as acetaminophen.

In addition to relieving headaches, peppermint oil also has other therapeutic uses:

  • Helps relieve gas, bloating, nausea, cramping and stomach upset
  • Muscle tension and pain relief - since it increases the blood flow to the injured area, it aids in healing as well
  • Helps alleviate stress
  • Helps alleviate motion sickness
  • Eases irritable bowel syndrome

Peppermint oil is available at Whole Foods and other health food stores.
